The True Purpose of the Second Amendment
Posted on May 26, 2016 by Robert Ringer — Comments (57)
Last week I paid a visit to my orthopedic doctor (“Dr. Rasheed”), whom I hadn’t seen in years. He’s a friendly little chap with a name I’ve never been able to pin to a nationality. I told him I thought maybe he was Jewish when I first met him some years ago, because I vividly recall him using the term “Oy Vay.”
To which he replied, “No, I’m not Jewish, I’m from Iran — but I married a nice Jewish girl from New York.” Too funny.
He then told me that his father had escaped from Iran with his wife and children during the 1979 revolution and came to America. Once settled here, his dad joined the CIA and became a spy, travelling back and forth to Iran. It sounded a bit dangerous for my tastes, but he managed to survive for decades and retired with a distinguished career under his belt.
Dr. Rasheed then pivoted to a philosophical mode and said that what most angers him about the nuclear deal that the U.S. made with Iran is that it gives that country legitimacy. I hadn’t specifically thought about it that way, but he’s absolutely right. You don’t make deals with dictatorships, because it clearly implies that you accept them as legitimate governments.
My doctor went on to say that the bottom line to the Iranian situation is the same as with every dictatorship: It all gets down to who has the guns. In other words, Mao had it right. All the mumbo-jumbo talk politicians engage in is meaningless, because, in the end, the only thing that matters is who has the guns.
Or, as the good doctor put it, when thousands of people were rioting in the streets in Tehran and begging the U.S. to help them, it was a lost cause from the start because the revolutionary leaders had the guns and we had a president who actually wanted the mullahs to keep the masses in check.
Whether it’s Iran, North Korea, or the mid-20th century Nazis, when a small percentage of the population has guns and the rest of the population is banned from owning guns, the majority is helpless. Kind of like Chicago on a larger scale.
Make no mistake about it, the radical-left antigun people dream about completely disarming the population, because once they accomplish that, they don’t have to worry about laws or the Constitution. They hate opposition and they hate free speech, and the barrel of a gun is the best assurance that they will not have to put up with either of those messy issues.
If and when the last gun is confiscated in America, the message will be straightforward: Shut up, sit down, do what you’re told, and don’t complain.
Of course, those who want to get guns permanently out of the hands of law-abiding citizens realize that they have to hide their true intentions by talking about such items as “background checks,” “mental-health issues,” “gun-show loopholes,” “assault rifles,” etc.
It’s reminiscent of Ted Kennedy’s insidious assurances that his illegal Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 “will not flood our cities with immigrants. It will not upset the ethnic mix of our society. It will not relax the standards of admission. It will not cause American workers to lose their jobs.” Very cute, Ted. Very cute.
The modus operandi of the radical left is: Lie, get your foot in the door, then slowly raise the stakes and end up with what you were really after from the very start. It’s deceitful, but it works. Every antigun law is merely a step along the path to total gun confiscation. To think otherwise is naiveté. The best way to avoid this freedom-ending result is to refuse to yield an inch from the outset, regardless of how hysterical and angry progressives may become.
That means not being afraid to point out the main purpose of the Second Amendment. It is not to accommodate hunters; it’s not to allow people to engage in target practice; it’s not even for protection from common criminals.
The main purpose of the Second Amendment is to give citizens the means to protect themselves from a tyrannical government. If we are embarrassed to state, loudly and clearly, what the Constitution actually says, then the case for liberty is lost by default.
What is needed is a national referendum that confirms the true meaning of the Second Amendment — that every citizen, regardless of which state he resides in, has a God-given right to carry any kind of gun he chooses at any time, concealed or open, without permission from any local, state, or federal authority.
Sorry, but I just don’t recall the Founders ever saying anything about a law-abiding citizen needing a permit to carry a gun.
I had a co-worker that had left Cuba back in 1959 that told me the pretty much the exact same story as your friend from Iran. Author L. Neil Smith says that there is only one REAL reason that liberal politicians push for gun "control" and it's not what they claim the reason is. They want to do to you things that if you still had your guns that they wouldn't be able to do.
Robert,
I have been hoping for awhile that you would write about the significance of the use of propaganda in the lefts antics to take away our 2nd amendment rights.. So, much of what I see being used on the under informed masses in America is straight out of Joseph Goebbels playbook. Included are a few of his quotes that apply today.
1. If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained . only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.
2. A lie told once remains a lie but a lie told a thousand times becomes the truth
3. There will come a day when all the lies will collapse under their own weight, and the truth will triumph again.
4. The essence of propaganda consists in winning people over to an idea so sincerely, so vitally, that in the end they succumb to it utterly and can never escape from it.
Sounds just like Fox News. Keep telling the lies and they will be believed.
Fox News?? They are late-comers to the party of media deception and outright lies. You might start with NBC, CBS, ABC, and then CNN if you want to vilify LIARS in the media. I am no overall fan of Fox, but there are a few bright lights – Judge Andrew Napolitano, John Stossel, and Neil Cavuto come to mind. There are NONE on the other networks!!
Jane Doe is an a******
>I have been hoping for awhile that you would write about the significance
>of the use of propaganda in the lefts antics to take away our 2nd amendment rights.
I'm not a big fan of the concept of rights (natural / inalienable rights). I believe that the non-aggression principle serves liberty far better than the poorly understood and often subjective concept of "rights.". However, by definition, rights cannot be "taken away" or even surrendered. They just "are." They can be infringed or their existence denied and not recognized or accepted by people, but they persist (if you believe they exist at all, because they are merely a concept). Actions, including the non-aggression principle, trump concepts!)
Relying on the nonaggression principle is as unrealistic and naive as wanting to rid the world of all guns- great in theory, but it will never happen. Believing that everyone will suddenly be 'nice' to everyone else or that guns will magically dissappear is a pipe dream. I would rather protect my family with any means necessary.
HUMM"" Ar you happy to listen to yourself? Funny to observe so many Americans (the gun defenders) use a 'freedom' guarantee (2nd Amendment) as a justification to kill many THOUSANDS in a year.
The US is the only country in the world with a good standard of living that has so many poor, so many guns and so few freedom of the press.
You mention of Iran as a dictatorship (not so pro-US),
but forget to mention Saudi Arabia (useful to the US), which is also a dictatorship. But that would demolish your argument, so you let that aside.
Bizarre and skewed evaluation of a situation that reminds of the type
of 'info' broadcasted on the tightly concentrated TV and papers.
Just look at the ongoing electoral farce going on.
I'm Canadian and have some very great and good American friends.
They have traveled a lot; that changes everything. They have cultural knowledge. It works because it creates mutual bonds.
Highly recommended.
Freedom is not free. Statistically you're very unlikely to be killed by a gun in the USA unless you're involved in crime (a fact never mentioned by the look left)
And, the USA's first amendment is far stronger protection for freedom of speech than Canada's anemic Charter s. 2.
Your comment about Saudi Barbaria is utter nonsense. The example of Iran was pertinent because his doctor had a connection to Iran.
There is no farce going on electorally. Democracy is messy and Americans are clearly no longer willing to allow career politicians to destroy our magnificent country. A people that elect a milquetoast like Justin Trudeau deserve nothing but ridicule.
When your country is perfect, feel free to criticize. Until that time, well, you know.
All I can say is that Ted Kennedy killed more people with his automobile that I have with my guns. And that's a fact. In addition, legal, responsible gun owners are a) justifying the killing of "many thousands of people." The fact of the matter is, if someone really wants to kill you, they will stab, you, beat you to death with a bat, poison you, run you over, or even strap you down and force you to listen to liberals lying over and over about guns until you choke to death on your own vomit.
Second of all, if you insist that all legal, legitimate owners of guns are somehow "responsible" for the relatively few gun deaths per year, then gun-grabbers are 100% responsible for the 20 million+ deaths in WWII. That's right! Hitler was a very efficient and effective gin-grabber. Once there were no more guns, there was no more resistance. It is interesting to note that a small Jewish (and armed) neighborhood in a Warsaw ghetto held off the Nazis longer than the entire country of France did! Another fact.
So if you must ask responsible gun owners in the USA why they like illegal gun violence, then I must ask you why you love Hitler and Nazism so much. I mean, fair is fair, right?
Ah, the arrogance of the French! I'm Canadian as well, and it is the likes of you that has the rest of Canada completely willing to say bye-bye if there ever is another referendum.
In all honesty, I don't understand a word you've written.
I'm Canadian as well, and embarrassed at your comment! Roberts dead on! I may not speak for all of Canada, but neither do you!
Maybe start by using a real name. Any comment made are per se personal. I represent nobody but myself unless stated otherwise.
Using your real name, as if it has any weight to it…which it doesn't….isn't the issue at hand being discussed. But that's a Liberal for you….always trying to take the focus off the issue being discussed because their own argument holds no weight! It's bleeding hearts like you that are the problem these days! You're a part of a tiny minority whose asses will soon be handed to them!
YOU need to shut up and stay in CANADA. You and your opinions are neither wanted or needed. S.T.F.U. WE have the 2ND Amendment for a reason. TO FIGHT TURDS LIKE YOU!
I wish there had been more Canadians like you in the last election. I fear for your future, especially after what we've been through for the past seven and a half years.
If everyone had a gun, crime would go down drastically.
Everyone?? OMG, how frightening. I'm not anti-gun but surely there has to be SOME type of regulation re: gun possession, no?? Can't have the lunatics running
the asylum!!
Yes, everyone. Why does society allow anyone they wouldn't trust with a gun, to possess a knife, or a baseball bat, or a car, or purchase explosive gasoline? Besides, if everyone else they encountered also had a gun, how much serious harm could they possibly do with theirs, before being summarily eliminated from the gene pool by a passerby? An armed society is eventually a polite society. ◄Dave►
Helen, the lunatics ARE running the asylum, and have been for many decades. Gun regulations – made by ignorant and criminal politicians do NOT reduce crime, but just make it more difficult to defend oneself against law-breakers and those who have no moral code. In the end, the real issue, is that govt. – which is PURE CRIMINAL – will have all the power, and citizens will be reduced to absolute slavery, instead of just the partial slavery we now have.
Its OK Chicken little.Just Remember an ARMED society is a POLITE society.
Arms regulations are a slippery slope and, on the whole, harmful to people. Plus, who are you to point a gun at peaceable people who are keeping and bearing arms? I'll answer my own question; you are a violent hypocrite! It doesn't matter that you use the proxy guns of the state. YOU are initiating violence using guns when you advocate gun regulations and "gun control" (civil disarmament)!
Control freaks and lunatics ARE already running the asylum! They gain their power though elections and political processes. They are our masters and rulers ("public servants"). The voting booth is the most violent place on earth. It's where people use the state's arms and violence, via proxy, to initiate aggression against others and control them.
Gun control has absolutely nothing to do with guns, it's all about control.
Mexico is an excellent example of what would happen to us. The people are virtually helpless to home invasion, kidnapping, and extortion.
"The main purpose of the Second Amendment is to give citizens the means to protect themselves from a tyrannical government." IF you think that something such as this could never occur in this country, google "The 1946 Battle of Athens, Tennessee." That was a mere 70 years ago!
So true. If only the government has guns, the citizens become its puppets.
The Bill of Rights was written for very good reasons, and those who are now trying to demolish it are the very ones who swore to uphold it.
The 2nd Amendment is the reset button on the Constitution. Ultimately, if the 1st Amendment doesn't work, the 2nd one will! Leftist statists and their jackbooted thugs, need to be dissuaded from even considering "Gun Collecting." ◄Dave►
"the very ones who swore to uphold it."
Absolutely on the mark! They should all be tried for treason! Every federal government employee (and most state employees) nhave sworn such an oath as a condition of their employment! It is the first protection of our Constitution, and when have you ever heard of it being enforced? It may take a Citizens Tribunal to get this under control and our Constitution back!
agreed … but we do have to figure out how to keep guns out of the hands of inner-city gangsta thugs and the likes of Adam Lanza …
and BTW, Robert, I believe the nazis were messing with the world in the mid 20th century …
That is happen without any additional effort. "Gangsta thugs" cease to be common when they can not continue the "bad behavior" without much punishment. If one of the thugs get caught today, they are given a light sentence that they will server only a small portion of on the grounds that they "not given a fair chance" or "do not have the job opportunities". They chose "illegal gang activities" as their profession and job. When the chances of them being stopped either by deadly force from a citizen or by the police/court system their number will be drastically lower.
Most of Mr. Ringer's content, as almost always, are well-written–but contain garbage thoughts.
Thank you. Always nice to hear that my garbage thoughts are well written.
You are obviously a lame-brain. Don't bother reading any more columns–they are beyond you.
Just a short observation, I guess you meant to write the mid-20th century Nazis (not the mid-19th).
One clarification please: the word used in the Bill of Rights is "arms." Most of our founders were brilliant and understood that technology advances, even (especially) for weapons. Consequently they had no desire to limit the legal definition, nor the god-given rights of the people.
As I've said repeatedly for years on this blog, the Second Amendment veto stamped on the backsides of the Washington collectivists IS the only action that actually delivers "change you can believe in".
All of the political yapping and political promises, promises, promises won't change the cycle of revolution. The fact of the matter is that some kind of revolution must periodically take place. Revolution against the political establishment is just a fact of life. Personally, I'm all for a revolution based on education and enlightenment absent any violence whatsoever. But deep down I know where this is heading: economic collapse, war ( maybe world war) violent revolution, and millions of gallons of spilled blood.
I've said this dozens of times before, and I'll say it again. Join the NRA and the GOA, because either you or you children or grandchildren are going to need guns — heavy duty guns — the kind that cut down government goons — and as much ammo as you can afford to stockpile.
It is imperative that the people try every administrative and legal remedy available first! The Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is a very good place to start. Even the American Revolutionaries tried tirelessly for years to work with the crown before resorting to armed resistance. Further, we must not give up on educating people.
That notwithstanding, I recall Thomas Jefferson's quote: "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."
"It is imperative that the people try every administrative and legal remedy available first!"
Yes. That's why I support Trump. Because Trump could actually delay the day of reckoning. And as bad as it is right now in America, it could get a whole lot worse.
America is "On The Road to Serfdom". And it's a "long and winding road". But somewhere down the line is the end of the road. When the next Great Depression hits, that's when the SHTF. And when the SHTF, I would not want to be without an assault rifle. I look at it this way: we all are one day going to have a choice: FIGHT ON YOUR FEET OR LIVE ON YOUR KNEES……
RS, has it ever occurred to you that we are being played like a fiddle, and by continuing to delay the inevitable SHTF, our generation is letting our posterity down? It might just be that hoping Trump can again delay it, might one day be viewed as an act of cowardice by an old man, hoping to put off the unpleasantness until after he has gone.
I have been saying for years that they are delaying the implementation of their NWO dreams, until after we Vietnam era veterans have either died, or are too old to fight. At the same time, they have been indoctrinating and training the current kids in the military and DHS, to be ready and willing to confiscate civilian arms, and shoot or roundup dissidents when so ordered.
After the first oil crisis in '73, I became convinced that the US government was completely broke, and that there was no way the politicians could continue to get away with inflating the currency, to hide it from the sheeple. Today the term is 'preppers'; but back then they called those of us preparing for SHTF 'survivalists.'
By the time of the second oil crisis in '79, I was totally prepared to bug out on a moment's notice, to survive in the Sierra wilderness for at least a year. I found that I was actually rather anxiously awaiting the demise of society, so I could begin the adventure. Had I been able to find a rugged woman interested in joining me, I probably would not have waited.
By then, however, it was obvious that when the SHTF, it was going to be rather crowded in the hills, so I bought a commercial fishing boat and dropped out of society. I reckoned it would be safer at sea, than competing with other survivalists in the hills, and much easier to find a companion. I figured that there would continue to be a reliable market for protein, and that I could always trade fresh fish for enough fuel and supplies to go out and catch some more. Living fulltime at sea was an interesting life for a few years.
Beyond all reasonable expectations, the Feds somehow managed to keep the charade of solvency going, and postponing the inevitable reckoning. Fast forward to the early '90s, and I was living an enjoyable self-sufficient lifestyle on a 300 acre cattle ranch in the Sierra foothills, 30 miles from the nearest town, which I visited once a month to top off our year's storage of staples and supplies. After Ruby Ridge, Waco, and all the NWO propaganda, we in my ranching community once again anticipated the SHTF to be imminent. We formed a militia, to defend our critters from the starving masses, we expected would soon be "heading for the hills" in search of food.
That too somehow never materialized, and by the next over-hyped potential crisis of Y2K, I was back to living in a small town on the California coast. Somewhat prepared for it, Y2K fizzled too. Then came 9/11. Back to the gas station to top off the jerry cans and propane tanks. Then to COSTCO, for more stores of rice, beans, and coffee, etc. Nope… even though it triggered perpetual wars, and Bush doubled the national debt funding them, that didn't trigger SHTF either.
When the economy totally crashed in '08, the day of reckoning had finally arrived, and a lifetime of preparation would soon pay off. The smoke from the printing presses running 24/7 at the US Treasury, was creating a perpetual pall over DC, and even the most clueless sheeple were going to be alarmed by the massive inflation of the currency and severe unemployment statistics.
No, wait… they are getting away with that too. Obama has doubled the debt once again, and his obsequious bureaucrats and press have manipulated the statistics, to falsely report low price inflation and unemployment. The hopeless sheeple slumber on, and inexplicably, his approval ratings are actually rising.
Now in my 70's, I suspect they will continue to get away with delaying the reckoning, until I am completely out of the game. Given my recent flirtation with the concept of a laissez faire stateless society, to replace the corrupt state, perhaps I already am. I have been enjoying this election season immensely, and do look forward to seeing how it turns out, when Trump is sworn in as POTUS.
Yet, I can't help the niggling feeling that somehow I have shirked my duty to posterity, and allowed the forces of evil to slowly destroy the nation I once revered, and swore a solemn oath to defend. Am I wrong? ◄Dave►
Yours is a very interesting account, but it's a rather common albeit wonderful sounding story. By the sound of it you indeed lived a wonderful life. Many a good man ( and woman) have readied themselves for when the SHTF. But aren't you mostly glad another Great Depression as been averted? — and maybe a neoDark Age has been put off for a future day?
Personally, I've gone the whole nine yards, including living alone in the Alaskan bush. Lived in NYC; lived, laughed, and loved in Asia. My very first solo adventure outside of the U.S. was Europe — an unforgettable excursion. Mountains, jungles (both concrete and swampy) deserts, plains and beaches — I've done them all. But I've not yet lived on a boat. I think I'll opt out of that adventure. But I've thought about it a time or two.
I intend to pass my stockpiles on to my children and grandchildren. But more importantly, I'm passing on the stockpiles of knowledge, experience and wisdom to survive in both an urban and suburban environment. And, if necessary, to survive a nuclear war. A nuclear holocaust is probably not survivable unless you're among the chosen few who make it into one of those government military bases which are buried 100 stories deep and stocked up with enough supplies for a decade. But you never know unless you try..
As far as "shirking your duty" goes, I'll tell you what I've told many a good man — including militiamen: don't make the same mistake as the Bundy family. Don't take on the government in a manner in which you'll lose. Right now it's better to fight an info war right on up until the progressives run out of other people's resources to redistribute to the ignorant masses. When the welfare checks stop ( or become worthless) and the economy totally collapses…. then the violence shall began. My advice is don't start the violence. Keep educating. Keep enlightening. Keep fighting within the system for gun rights. Then, when the time comes, and not a moment before, strike at will.
Wait. Be patient. Make your move ( whatever that move is ( be it violent or nonviolent)) when Washington is suffering from a fatal case of ataxia.
In revolution, timing is everything.
Perhaps one day we shall have a conversation about what is money. Then I'll explain how the day of reckoning has been put off for decades. Once an individual understands what money is and what money isn't, then it becomes clear why "The Road to Serfdom" is so very long and winding.
I think I already understand the nature of Money rather well. Why don't you just hit me with your theory on the length of Hayek's road? ◄Dave►
Yes it has been an interesting and enjoyable life, well lived. I, too, have lived in 8 countries on 4 continents, two tropical islands, and 16 States. I never did decide what I wanted to be when I grew up, so I never bothered to do so. 🙂
Thanks for the advice; but my "militia" endeavors ended over 20 years ago, and were always defense oriented. At my age, I am beyond kinetic offense anyway, so I'll not be foolishly poking at any beehives. ◄Dave►
Excellent input.
RJR, I've got a lot of miles out of your words from your Collapse of Western Civilization book, page 204. You made three great points:
1) we have a natural right to defend ourselves…;
2) its none of the government's business how you go about it…;
3) and you need to be able to defend yourself from three types of people —
* the everyday thug'
* the hordes who will take to the streets,
* the government.
Enough said.
Amen, Bro!!!
all that I have read about the second amendment seems to portray legitimate gun owners as the bad guys when it is obviously the other way around…and also missing is older people who would be helpless and afraid if not for self defense of their lives and homes…..sorry, I don't buy this propaganda the left dishes out. The statement stands "they only want your guns to do worse things to you"
I too have lived an exciting life of change after change, sometimes roller coaster style, but I am luckier than most. I worked most everything in during my firsst 80 years, and get to go Home to (I believe) a higher and better Reality within the next 10 (years). I now spend good time limping and writing. And hoping nothing happens to THE GRID that might stop my SS and VA checks that enable me to live well in the Philippines. I feel sorry for young people who may not have the chance to live a quality life. But, one step at a time, there is still HOPE that WWIII can be averted, though I contend it has already begun. Nostradamus said it WILL come. Ruth Montgomery's Guides said it will begin in the Middle East, and it has. But, Nostradamus sez the world doesn't end until a time during the 3,000 plus era. But, what the quality of life will be is another matter. RE avoiding Big War I believe Teddy Roosevelt's advice still works: "walk softly and carry a big stick". A great big stick, and many of 'em! Obama's BS in Japan
is unrealistic and Stu-Pid! In any case, one day, one step at a time keeps us going until our personal end. And that's called Pragmatism.
Thank you sir, for your excellent research that should end this discussion!

They say, the truth will set you free. You have stated the truth many have stated before. The people of this country are for the most part controlled by the media which is is controlled and used with great result to push all manner of freedom destroying liberal agendas.
The most dangerous weapons to life on earth are those possessed by the US government that have killed millions of innocent people world wide. That guns are used to stop personal crime 200000 times a year is seldom reported in the US media.
Anyone who thinks civilian ownership of weapons will prevent the state, or federal government from destroying their rights knows nothing of Waco,Tx massacre, Ruby Ridge, Idaho,or ranchers in Oregon http://www.thedailysheeple.com/heres-what-really-… , or the Boston Bombing house to house searches. We are out gunned and defenceless against those who use the 'law' as a shield for murder. They will definitely " pry them from our cold dead hands" but most likely the police state will confiscate them with out a fight.
GOOD Article! CORRECT and ON POINT EXACTLY! Thank You SIR!
Good Article.
Freedom is something that gives us the right to talk, live without harming others. Having gun perhaps used to protect us, but least bothered about when we would like to target someone. Weaponization among the population is not going to protect us.
http://essayhelpcollege.blogspot.com/
Having weapon is something that gives self-protection. When a weapon is not used for our own animosity, the consequence would be better. We have our individual rights to protect us from anything, but that doesn't mean to hurt other before they threaten us. Moral values should be there.

After reading this post, I came to know about the true purpose of the second amendment. You have shared the experience of the person during the time of war. Try to share more experiences so that the concept is clear to the public. trailer park
